Work It - Clothes for the Office from Phase Eight

The weather is well and truly warming up so it's time to start updating your working wardrobe with some key fashion pieces. Read on below for tips about what to wear to work to look on trend but professional.

It's important to look professional and smart in the office but this does not mean that you should forget about fashion. Work wear sometimes has a tendency to look masculine and boring, especially if you're just sticking to your trusty old suit, so you want to update your work wardrobe each season with some key pieces that show that you know what is on trend. At the other extreme, you do not want to look like you're trying too hard by following each and every fashion trend available, or dressing in an overly feminine way with too many frills or showing too much flesh. Go for a happy medium where you look up-to-date and on trend but smart and professional. This way, everyone will take you seriously and you will feel confident in the workplace.

Tips for dressing for work:
  • Be Yourself- Choose items that you will feel yourself in. If you try to be someone you are not, it will show and you'll feel less confident.
  • Think tailoring - Ensure that you show off your feminine shape with tailored jackets and suits. Boxy styles will hide your waist and will make you look wider and more masculine.
  • Look professional - Don't dress in anything that reveals too much flesh. If your skirt is shorter, ensure that you cover your chest and vice-versa. However, don't dress too conservatively either. Think feminine rather than provocative.
  • Shoes - High heels are great for lengthening legs and making you appear slimmer but only wear styles that are comfortable and that you can walk in. There's nothing worse that seeing someone totter around the office in shoes that are completely unsuitable, and if you are uncomfortable, you won't be able to concentrate on your job.
  • Start with the basics and build up your work wardrobe. Buy a few suits, trousers, skirts and jackets in neutral colours and update your wardrobe each season with new tops and dresses. This is a less expensive way to adapt your wardrobe and ensures that you stay on trend without breaking the bank.
  • Make it your own - use your accessories to personalise your work attire. A well cut suit can look different each time you wear it if you change the combination of shoes, jewelery, bag and top that you wear with it.

Here are some examples of office outfits that follow all of the rules above and will ensure that you look on trend for Spring/Summer.

Outfit 1
This Antique coloured dress is a great colour for the summer months and is a good base to accessorise. You can either keep it simple as shown below with nude shoes and a coordinating necklace, or you could add larger pieces of statement jewelery for a bolder look. The platform shoe is great for the office as it is more comfortable than a regular heel and the crystal teardrop necklace adds a bit of additional style.

Outfit 2
This classic shirt dress is a staple for most office wardrobes and is lifted with the cream detailing. The Emma Jacket with it's tailored cut and cropped sleeves will help to emphasise your waist and give you the all important hourglass silhouette. I've used the Cara Platform Pumps again as they are a very versatile style and colour that will go with most of your summer work wardrobe.

Outfit 3
Jumpsuits are a fashionable and smart alternative to a dress or trouser suit and this Wrap Belted Jumpsuit is fantastic. It is super flattering with it's wide leg to balance heavier hips, and wrap at the torso to emphasise the waist. The clever pleating also disguises the tummy area and the deep V neck is flattering on all body shapes. You might think that a jumpsuit is a bit OTT for the office but if you pair it with flats (if you're tall and slim) or these great Casual T Bar Sandals, you won't look overdressed. The heel will also help to slim and elongate the body.

And the even better news is that Phase Eight are currently running a mid season sale with up to 50% off many items.
